Cyprus Research Awards

The Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF), in the frame of its activities for recognizing and rewarding research excellence, has established an annual Research Award for Cyprus since 2007. In 2013, the Award was modified, in order to reward young and more experienced researchers separately, in a parallel attempt to support early-career researchers and at the same time promote distinguished scientists in Cyprus.

Cyprus Research Award – Distinguished Researcher

The “Cyprus Research Award – Distinguished Researcher” is granted to excellent
scientists with extensive research experience, who conduct research in Cyprus and
can demonstrate recent, significant and internationally recognized research results. The
Award aims to appraise and promote the work and personality of these distinguished
scientists, who honour Cyprus through their high-quality research and its impact.

The “Cyprus Research Award – Distinguished Researcher” is awarded annually, in rotation, in the following thematic areas:

Life Sciences

Physical Sciences & Engineering

Social Sciences & Humanities

The distinguished researchers must be nominated by another person or body, via the submission of a short online form and are evaluated based on the quality of their research activity, the candidates’ career so far and their leadership abilities.

The nominated researchers must:

  • hold a PhD degree,
  • have a minimum of 7 years of research experience since the completion of their PhD and up to the announcement date of the Call, and
  • have been working and living in Cyprus on a permanent basis for the last three (3) years.

The nominated researchers may be of any nationality and must have been working in any Research Organization, Enterprise or other public or private entity located in the areas under the control of the Republic of Cyprus.

The evaluation of the nominations is carried out by an Expert Evaluation Committee
(EEC). The Committee consists of permanent members (members of the Board of
Directors of the RIF) and temporary members selected on the basis of the annual thematic
area for the Award.

The Evaluation criteria are:

Quality of the Research Activity

  • Quality of the most important research results of the nominee, with emphasis on the last five (5) years, their importance and impact at an international level.
  • Evidence of the use and exploitation of the results of the research activity for the improvement of the quality of life in Cyprus, the wider European area or globally or/and the possibility of commercial exploitation, introduction in the international market and patent registration.
  • Publications in notable international scientific journals, books, chapters in books or monographs and presentations in high impact international conferences.

Overall Career

  • Awards and honorary distinctions, member of scientific boards and academies.
  • Important collaborations with distinguished researchers/entities abroad.

Leadership skills

  • Leadership skills and ability to inspire the next generation of researchers.

Cyprus Research Award – Young Researcher

The “Cyprus Research Award – Young Researcher” is awarded to young researchers
that have demonstrated the ability to perform high quality research. The Award aims
to highlight the research activity, achievements and personality of young scientists
undertaking research in Cyprus, who have shown an ability to produce significant and
internationally recognized results from the early stages of their career.

In addition, the Award aims to actively support young researchers, facilitating the continuation of their work and research career, by providing funding of €60.000 to the winners. The “Cyprus Research Award – Young Researcher” is awarded annually in each of the following thematic areas:

Life Sciences

Physical Sciences & Engineering

Social Sciences & Humanities

The young researchers must be nominated by another person or body, via the submission of a short, online nomination form.

The nominated researchers are invited to present the work and results of their research activities and the importance of research results, their CV and a general framework for their future research activities, to be taken into account during the evaluation procedure.

The nominated researchers should:

  • hold a PhD degree on the announcement date of the Call,
  • have a maximum of seven (7) years of experience since the completion of their PhD and up to the announcement date of the Call (between the 7th of February 2013 and the 7th of February 2020 inclusive)
  • have been working and living in Cyprus on a permanent basis during the last three (3) years up to the announcement date of the Call (between the 16th April 2018 and the 16th of April 2021 inclusive)

Extensions are possible under certain circumstances for career breaks for maternity or paternity leave, military service or documented sick leave[1].

The nominated researchers may be of any nationality and must have been working in any Research Organization, Enterprise or other Public or Private Entity located in the areas under the control of the Republic of Cyprus.

The evaluation of the nominations will be carried out by three (3) Evaluation Committee (EC). The Committees will consist of evaluators/experts from abroad selected on the basis of the thematic areas.

Evaluation Criteria

For the evaluation, the following three criteria are applicable:

1. Research Activity

  • Quality of the most important results of the Young Researcher’s research activity and their importance at an international level.
  • Evidence of the use and exploitation of the results of the research activity for the improvement of the quality of life in Cyprus and the wider European area or globally or/and the possibility of commercial exploitation, introduction in the international market and patent registration.
  • Publications in distinguished scientific journals, publication of a book, book chapters or monographs and presentations in high impact international conferences.

2. Curriculum Vitae

  • Qualifications and achievements of the Young Researcher.

3. Future Research

  • The suggested framework of activity for the continuation of the Young Researcher’s work in the coming years.
